The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has been honoured with an excellent leadership award by the Geology Class of 2002 of the institution.
The award was presented to Obi during a courtesy call on her, in her office on Tuesday in Calabar, by representatives of the class.
The National Chairman of Geology Class of 2002, Mr George Akan, who presented the award on behalf of the class, said that Obi was promoting academic excellence and discipline in the institution.
Akan lauded the vice-chancellor’s leadership quality and giant strides in the university.
He said that the award presentation was part of the activities lined up to celebrate the class members’ 20th year reunion.
He said that the class was impressed with Obi’s policies which, he said, centred on quality education, infrastructure development, entrepreneurial skills for students and discipline.
“We also want to institute a price for the overall best graduating student from geology department during every year’s convocation ceremony.
“We have come here to present this award to you, the VC, because since you took over, a lot has changed for good in the institution,” he said.
Reports have it that the class donated to the university, ceiling fans, HP desktops, air conditioners and projectors, among other items.
Responding, the vice-chancellor praised the class members for the gesture.
She also hailed them for relating with one another 20 years after graduation.
She described them as worthy ambassadors of the university and praised the class for producing seasoned politicians, administrators rcontractors, businessmen/women and lecturers.
She thanked the class members for giving back to their alma mata, and urged them to keep representing the institution creditably in their different fields of endeavours.
