The Progressive Students Movement (PSM), a pan-African student movement, has congratulated Sen. Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for a resounding victory at the just-concluded Osun governorship poll.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Adeleke was declared winner of the July 16 Osun Governorship Polls by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) early on Sunday.
Adeleke won in 17 out of 30 council areas of the state and had more than the required 25 percent spread in each of the council areas in the state.
The President of the group, Bestman Okereafor, gave the congratulatory message in a statement on Sunday in Enugu.
“The attention of PSM has been drawn to the outcome of the Osun State gubernatorial election held on July 16 with Sen. Ademola Adeleke declared as winner and governor-elect.
“We congratulate Adeleke for his well-deserved victory. We equally commend INEC for conducting a credible election in Osun State as a clear testimony that indeed votes now counts in Nigeria,” Okereafor said.
He noted that PSM considers the victory of Adeleke in defeating an incumbent governor as a wake-up call to underperforming first-term state governors in different states of the federation.
According to him, the recent development in Osun clearly indicates that in 2023, Nigerians will vote for individual personalities and not political parties.
“It has been observed that many underperforming public office holders always hide under the leverage of their political parties and their popularity to seek re-election,” he said.
The PSM leader also appealed to political office holders to ensure that “all and sundry feel the true dividends of democracy for future purposes.”
