Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, stated this at a press conference on Thursday in Maiduguri.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Nasiru Sani-Gwarzo, the minister said the gesture was to strengthen the capacity of police personnel to fight crimes in the state.
She said the commission was providing support to police, military, security agencies and other stakeholders to enhance security and sustainable development in the region.
She said the commission had donated vehicles to the Armed Forces and supported medical treatment of wounded soldiers at the military health facility in Maiduguri.
The minister said that police personnel made huge sacrifices to protect the society, and stressed government’s commitment to provide necessary support and logistics to the police to enable it to discharge its duties effectively.
“We will encourage the commission to go beyond soft support to operational support. You also need communication gadgets and intelligence equipment to encourage you to do your jobs well.
“The commission also supported the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri to mitigate the psychosocial impact of the crises on local population,” she said.
Sen. Yusuf Yusuf, Chairman, Senate Committee on Special Duties, advocated improved welfare and training for the police.
He commended the police for its role towards protection of lives and property in the country.
The Managing Director of the NEDC, Dr Mohammed Alkali said commission had provided operational vehicles to the police and rehabilitated police barrack and accommodation in Garkida Local Government Area of Adamawa.
He said the commission had also awarded contract for rehabilitation of police stations in Konduga and Bama LGAs of Borno, adding that the stations were razed by Boko Haram insurgents.
The gesture, he said was to provide enabling environment for the police to effectively discharge its constitutional mandate.
Also, The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba-Alkali said the gesture would enhance the operations of the police and other security agencies in the state.
Represented by Mr Ibrahim Zanna, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, in charge of Logistic and Supply, Baba-Alkali said the intervention was crucial to the return of civil authority and peace restoration process in the state.
While commending the commission for the gesture, the Police boss urged the commission to support the police to enable it to acquire more vehicles and equipment.
He reiterated the commitment of the command to partner with other security agencies protect lives and property as well as stabilise internal security in the state.
