The Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Lafia, Bishop David Ajang, on Friday called on clergymen to always preach the truth and not what the people desire to hear.
The bishop made the call in a homily in Lafia at the Diocesan Eucharistic Congress of the Lafia Catholic Diocese.
The Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion and the Lord’s Supper is a Christian rite that is considered a sacrament in most churches and as an ordinance in others.
Bishop Ajang noted that current preaching had changed from cautioning the people to desist from evil to avoid being condemned to hell, to preaching about prosperity.
He said clergymen were supposed to be the conscience of the society and must speak the truth at all times to guard against vices and crimes.
The bishop also advised the people to stop pushing clergymen to doing their bidding.
He added that sometimes adherents would take issues outside the realm of possibility to the clergy to seek solution to them through prayers.
He argued that prayers alone would not make a student to pass examinations as such student must study hard for success at the examination.
On the Eucharistic Congress, Bishop Ajang explained that the Eucharist is important during the celebration of Mass.
“Eucharist was instituted by Jesus; we are expected to sustain it as it is beneficial to the people,’’ the bishop added.
He cautioned that nobody has the right to add or to take anything away from the Bible and urged all to maintain the originality of the Holy Book.
The Eucharistic Congress had in attendance priests, reverend sisters, catechists as well as members from all parishes in the Catholic Diocese of Lafia.
