Delta Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Mrs Flora Alatan, on Friday distributed relief materials to rehabilitation centres for mentally challenged persons across the three senatorial districts of the state.
Alatan distributed the items to the proprietors of the seven centres across the three senatorial districts in Asaba.
He appealed to them not to relent in their efforts in catering for destitutes and mentally challenged persons undergoing rehabilitation in their homes.
The commissioner commended the caregivers for their collaboration and support in catering for the destitutes in the state.
Alatan also thanked Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa for making provision of the items, saying that the gesture was geared towards supporting those recently evacuated from the streets and added to the homes.
She noted that the government’s decision to reduce the burden of mentally challenged persons wandering the streets through the ministry, would give a facelift to the environment and the state as a whole.
The commissioner, therefore, called on the proprietors of the various rehabilitation homes to support government’s efforts by putting smiles on the faces of persons undergoing rehabilitation in their homes.
Alatan advised them to ensure that all the items provided by the government were put to effective use.
Reports have it that the items included foodstuffs such as tubers of yam, bags of rice, bags of beans, toiletries, disinfectants, cloths, mattresses and barbing clippers amongst others.
Responding, the Chairman of the Delta Traditional Medicine Board, Chief Ogbogodor Ogumu, thanked the state government for the gesture.
Ogumu assured that the board would do all within its powers to ensure that the programme and policies of government were achieved by providing the needed support to remove mentally challenged persons off the street.
