A University Don, Prof. Mustapha Halilu with Bauchi State University has urged the National Assembly to ensure speedy passage of the 2023 Appropriation Bill to fast-track effective implementation.
He also lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for the timely presentation of the proposed budget to a joint session of the National Assembly.
The lecturer who spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Bauchi, said the noble gesture of the president deserves commendation.
“The National Assembly needs to put in some effort, determination, and commitment to ensure early completion of work on the draft budget before the end of the year.
“Approving the budget on schedule by the lawmakers will facilitate its effective implementation in January,” he said.
Also, a public analyst, Martins Jaffiya said the president, in the budget presentation, reiterated his administration’s commitment to good governance, fighting corruption, and justice sector reform.
This, he said, would enable him to bequeath a better legacy to the succeeding administration on sound economic footing.
Retired civil servants in Bauchi, Garba Ibrahim, and Monica Musa lauded the appropriation of N854.8 billion for gratuities and pension administration in the 2023 fiscal year.
Ibrahim stressed the need for the government to adopt proactive measures to ensure the prompt release of funds to mitigate the sufferings of retirees.
“The president indicated his commitment to uplift the lives of senior citizens in all facets of human endeavors. Some of us have retired without a gratuity, while others still have challenges with their pensions,” she said.
