Agency donates relief items to flood victims, provides electricity to IDPs

The Rural Electrification Fund says it has donated food and other relief items to victims in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Kogi.
The relief items were distributed directly to victims in the IDP camps at Lokoja, Koton-Karfe, Ajaokuta and Ibaji local government areas of the state.

The agency also said that it provided electricity to the IDP camps and distributed life-saving kits to boat riders for the safety of their passengers in the affected local government areas.

Addressing newsmen at Adankolo camp in Lokoja on Thursday, Dr Sanusi Ohiare, Executive Director Rural Electrification Fund, said that the gesture was in response to the flood disaster that had claimed many lives and property in the state.

Ohiare, represented by Malam Kashim Maahi, the project coordinator of the organisation, said that the organisation was committed to providing relief items and other basic amenities to IDPs.

“Our mission is not only to provide food for the displaced persons but to also ensure their safety by providing electricity to light up their camps.

“This will provide means for charging their mobile phones to communicate with their family and loved ones.

“We are also providing life-saving kits for boat riders for the safety of their passengers now that boat ferrying has become a major means of transportation in and around the flooded areas,” he said.

He commended the state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, for his prompt response to disaster management at the state level.

He noted that the support was not only necessary at this critical time in the lives of fellow citizens, but that “it equally defines the purpose of leadership exemplified by the Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

He called on well-meaning Nigerians and friends of the country to support the efforts towards alleviating the suffering of the flood victims across the state.

Items donated include bags of rice, 7.5kva electricity generator sets, solar device charging systems and safety kits to the different camps.
