World Sight Day: Kwara Govt screens RTEAN, NURTW members

The Kwara Government has provided free medical outreach to members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

Reports have it that service was offered on Thursday in Ilorin ss part of activities to mark this year’s World Sight Day.

The outreach provided eye screening and enlightenment on eye care.

The programme was organised by the state Ministry of Health in collaboration with all eye care stakeholders in the state, who jointly celebrated the Year 2022 World Sight Day.

The day is set aside annually on Oct. 13 to increase awareness on global eye health issues, and used as an opportunity to render communal services and target special interest groups in eye care.

The theme of the 2022 celebration is: ‘’Love Your Eyes, Save Live”.

The exercise was specially dedicated to address eye health issues of commercial drivers in the state.

Speaking on the sidelines of the outreach, Dr Raji Razaq, the state Commissioner for Health, represented by the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Hajia Barakat Olarewaju, emphasised the importance of eye check-up for all and most importantly commercial drivers.

Razaq encouraged the RTEAN and NURTW members to make good use of eye hospitals whenever they noticed any unusual feelings about their eyes, and should avoid consuming substances that can affect their ability to function effectively.

He explained that the eye care teams were on ground at three designated locations in Ilorin, including Kwara Express, the state secretariats of the  RTEAN and NURTW.

Our correspondent also reports that highlights of the even included the distribution of prescribed free eye glasses and medications to drivers in each of the screening centres.

Surgical services were also carried out and free eye glasses were distributed during the outreach at the Primary Healthcare Centre, Idofin-Igbana, Ilorin.
