An Area Court in Jos on Monday sentenced a 17-year-old mechanic six months imprisonment for using dangerous weapon to forcefully collect phones from people.
A panel of two magistrates, Adam Sadiq and Hyacinth Dolnaan however, gave Gaius an option of N20,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to the offence.
They said the judgment would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such criminal acts.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported on Sept. 23 at the Laranto Police station by the complainants, Funmilayo Salami and Tosin Adewumi of Faringada Jos .
The prosecutor said that the convict in company of his friends, now at large, attacked the complainants with an axe, cutlass and iron rod and robbed them of their phones.
The offence, he said, is punishable under the provisions of Section 272 and 388 of Plateau Penal Code Law.
