Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Thursday, urged motorists to install the use of speed limiters in their vehicles in order to reduce road crashes on the highways.
Our correspondent reports that speed limiters is a device installed in vehicles in order to control vehicle speed or disallow drivers to go beyond the stipulated speed.
FRSC Unit Commander in Ore, Mr Sikiru Alonge, gave the advice during the formal commencement of the 2022 ember months’ campaign at Ondo Motor Park in Ore, Ondo State.
Reports have it that the campaign had, as its theme: “Avoid Speeding, Overloading and Unsafe Tyres to Arrive Alive.”
Alonge identified speeding, overloading and use of expired tyres as major causes of crashes on Ore-Benin expressway.
According to him, ember months signify a season of increase in the movement of commuters and vehicles to different directions because of increased social, religious and political activities.
“Our major challenges on this corridor are unnecessary speeding owing to the good road network.
“Other major causes of road crashes on this corridor include overloading of goods and passengers as well as use of expired tyres, both of which contribute to 67 per cent of crashes.
“It is strongly advised that motorists embrace use of speed limit devices in order to reduce road crashes, which usually result in loss of lives and property,” Alonge said.
He also urged motorists and other road users to ensure strict compliance with traffic rules and regulations.
Our correspondent also reports that representatives of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies as well as motorists, motorcyclists and other stakeholders were at the inauguration.
