The Actors Guild of Nigeria has reacted to the arrest of veteran actor, Chiwetalu Agu.
WITHIN NIGERIA had earlier reported that the veteran Nollywood actor was arrested by Nigerian Army troops for wearing Biafra clothing.
He was reportedly sharing food to the less privileged while dressed in Biafran regalia when he was apprehended by government forces on Upper Iweka Road in Onitsha.
Two soldiers approached Agu and wrestled him to the ground before dragging him away.
Speaking on the incident, the Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, said the veteran actor was apprehended for inciting members of the public and soliciting for support for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Reacting, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, in an interview with newsmen, condemned the fact that Agu was seen wearing a Biafra regalia.
He noted that considering high rate of insecurity in the country and knowing how hot the state is currently, Agu should have avoided being seen in such clothing.
He, however, said that the Guild is doing everything possible to ensure Chiwetalu Agu is released.
“I don’t know why he put on Biafra regalia. The State is hot and he knows this.
“We are in talk with the military officials to ensure he his released. We will do our best.
“I heard they have taken him to 82 Division of the Nigeria Military base,” he said.
