This December, acclaimed theater producer, Thespian Family Theatre will stage Bode Sowande’s intriguing play Mammy Water’s Wedding.
It is important to note that Mammy Water’s wedding has been staged at the KONA Arena in Lekki, Lagos, since Saturday, December 18, with the next dates set for December 25, 27, and 28.
The play, which is filled with intrigues, songs, dance, and suspense, is an interplay between earth and sky forces that addresses pollution and other issues related to climate change.
It centers around young Akinla who drowned while attempting to save others in Mammy Water’s Wedding but is rescued by Tarrela, the mermaid queen. Awakening in a different world beneath the sea, he fell in love with Tarrela, and they both vow to get married, but the condition is that Tarrela must be born as a human for that to happen.
In an ironic twist of the play, it happens that Tarrela is later born as Okuntoro to Adagunodo, a wealthy businessman whose trade is dumping waste into the sea, causing environmental pollution and disrupting the natural harmony between earth and water.
The play is inspiring enough for Christmas and end-of-season fun, as well as a brilliant story of ‘green balance’ and social advocacy for environmental protection.
The short play with all the fun and information it packs provides a break away from the regular Nollywood movie into the world of stage plays where you can get lost in arts in its purest form.
