Hollywood actor, Tom Holland’s career continues to hit sky-high at the box office, and it’s not only because of the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The actor’s latest movie Uncharted had a successful opening weekend having raked in $44 million in ticket sales.
As per Variety, the action-adventure film exceeded expectations with its gross earnings over Friday to Sunday, especially since estimates suggested it may make no more than $35 million. Given the long weekend, it’s now projected to make at least $52 million by the end of Monday thanks to ticket sales from over 4,275 movie theatres across North America.
Uncharted is inspired by the video game franchise of the same name, which followers Nathan Drake (portrayed by Holland on the big screen) as he travels the world looking for treasure.
It was confirmed in February 2020 that Uncharted was under production, with Reuben Fleischer in the director’s seat. Though the film was conceived as an origin story to the games, it took the most inspiration from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
Holland has been an up-and-coming actor for a number of years, but he’s been the hottest actor in town recently thanks to the new Spider-Man installment. Stepping into the shoes of the titular character, Holland stars alongside his real-life girlfriend, Zendaya, who plays his love interest on screen.
Despite Uncharted topping the box office this weekend, Spider-Man: No Way Home still projected to make a decent profit considering it’s been in theatres for nearing two months.
On Saturday, Collider predicted Spider-Man will earn $9.1 million during the four-day long weekend, keeping it in the top five spot on the box office. In total, the movie is said to have grossed over $772 million in the US since its debut in late December 2021.
Second place goes to Dog, the directorial debut of Reid Carolin and Channing Tatum, which is also performing better than predicted. The film has so far grossed $14.1 million in its opening weekend.
Uncharted, on the other hand, has nearly tripled that sum, indicating that the action film will continue to dominate the box office for the time being.
