The highly anticipated documentary ‘Afrobeats the Backstory’ by Ayo Shonaiya which documents the legendary rise of Afrobeats, has been confirmed to have its world premiere on Wednesday, June 29, 2022.
The documentary tells the history of Afrobeats through exclusive interviews and footage from national and international events and occasions.
Ayo Shonaiya has been involved in the Nigerian music scene for many years and has been instrumental in both the home growth of afrobeat and its export to the UK and the US.
The documentary is an exclusive journey back in time with over 300 hours of never before seen tapes that capture significant occasions and feature the early years of some of the biggest artists in Afrobeats.
The announcement was made on Ayo Shonaiya’s Instagram page as well as Boomplay’s page, announcing the premiere of the documentary.

The documentary also explores the roles performed by various parties, including the artists, DJs, marketers, the diaspora, and even the origins of Afrobeats.
Netflix will begin streaming “Afrobeats: The Backstory” on June 29, 2022.
