When Fireboy DML’s footage with Madonna first hit the airwave, fans of the YBNL Nation signee commended him for linking up with the legendary singer to expand his music career. Little did his fans know the American songstress pursued the Nigerian superstar for a collaboration.
Fireboy set the record straight in a new chat with Ebro Darden on Apple Music 1, stating that Madonna reached out to him twice, in 2019 and 2022, before he featured on the remix of her track, ‘Frozen.’
In 2019, the ‘Playboy’ crooner released his multiple award-winning debut album titled; ‘Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps.’ Fireboy was applauded for having a quality body of work as a budding musician in the Nigerian music industry. After the album was released, Madonna gave him a shocker when she contacted him to comment on his album.
Fireboy disclosed Madonna told him she loved his first studio album. He said she was like, “Yo, I love your album. It’s amazing.” “Is this the Madonna? Wow, thank you so much, this means a lot to me, “blah, blah blah, and that was it.”
The 64-year-old sent Fireboy another message on Instagram in 2022 to request him to feature in her song. “Fast forward to 2022, she hits me up on Instagram. “Yo, hey.” I’m like, “Hey, it’s her again! Wow!” And she’s like, “I want you to be a part of my classic, one of my classics.” I’m like, “Of course.”
“Then she sends it to me, I’m like, “Of course, I know this song!” She was like, “Yeah, she’s trying to do a remix. I’m like, “Of course, let’s do this,” and then went back and forth on WhatsApp,” he spoke of how he got featured on the ‘Frozen’ remix.
The 26-year-old described Madonna as a perfectionist, noting that they have that in common. “She’s a perfectionist, just like me. She’s sort of like a control freak in a way, too. I like that about her. We went back and forth and did that, and then we linked up to shoot the video.”
He further unveiled the ‘Frozen’ remix and Ed Sheeran-featured ‘Peru’ remix as his much-loved collaborations. “I think the Madonna record and Peru are easily my favourite collaborations, just because of the vibes that were around when we shot the video. Amazing, organic, natural,” Fireboy held.
He continued, “That is why I never force collaborations, just for moments like that. Some people force collaborations and the video shoots are always awkward. Nah, Nah. It was never like that with Madonna. She’s amazing.”
