Nigerian actress cum filmmaker, Mary Remmy-Njoku has questioned why Nigerians refer to those who speak with Nigerian accents as “local” and urged them to embrace it instead.
The movie producer said there are foreigners in Nigeria who speak English with an accent but they are not shamed for that, yet Nigerians shame themselves for speaking with an accent.
She encouraged Nigerians to embrace their accents and leave the foreign accents for when they travel abroad.
“To an average fool in Nigeria, “local person’ is a premium insult for someone who has a thick Nigerian accent and doesn’t follow the fashion trend.
I have seen someone who has barely left surulere, refer to another who moved from Ekiti as “local girl”.
The Indians in Anthony with heavy accent aren’t Locals. English no be their language. Neither is it ours.
Let’s stop being ignorant and embrace our Nigerian accents. It’s our identity.
We can continue the fake ‘I wanna gonna’ accent, when we travel abroad. For easier communication I guess.”
“I am a proud Nigerian local girl”
WITHIN NIGERIA recalls Mary Remmy-Njoku, gave some reasons why she feels some smart women pretend to be dumb, just to settile down.
The actress who recently renewed her wedding vows claimed many men don’t want to get married to smart women.
Most men today think smart and ambitious women are not good wife materials hence go for girls they think are dumb.
Mary Njoku asserts that many women pretend and only show their true colours after they have settled down with their partner.
She claimed smart women prefer smart men but most smart men don’t want smart women and informed men that the real ‘wife material’ is smart and ambitious. Taking to her Instagram page, Mary Njoku wrote:
“Smart women prefer smart in men but most smart men don’t want smart women. So the smart girls are getting what they want by being dumb. Until they enter HOUSE.
Oga, not all dumb girls are dumb. The real ‘Wife Material’ is smart and ambitious! I guess you have to be smart to know that. Its 2022!!! “
