How I feel about some chefs attempting to shatter my Guinness world record – Hilda Baci opens up

Hilda Baci speaks on colleagues' efforts to dethrone her

Hilda Effiong Bassey, better known as Hilda Baci, the celebrated Nigerian Chef, has finally addressed attempts made by other chefs to surpass her Guinness world record.

Baci is a popular restaurateur who made history by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon (individual) in May 2023.

She cooked for 93 hours and 11 minutes, surpassing the previous record of 87 hours and 45 minutes set by Indian chef Lata Tondon in 2019.

Hilda Baci’s remarkable achievement of cooking for over 93 hours has served as inspiration for Nigerian Chefs like Dammy, Deo, other chefs from regions in Africa, motivating them to undertake their own attempts at breaking the record.

In a recent interview conducted by Legit NG, Hilda Baci was questioned about her perspective on other individuals’ endeavors to surpass her feat.

In response, she confidently asserted that she perceives herself as a trailblazer and a source of inspiration for numerous individuals who are striving to break her record.

In her words;

“I feel i started a trend or like I am pretty much a trailblazer because only a trailblazer will start something and other people will want to do it”.

The first cooking marathon attempt to break Hilda’s record, organised by Ekiti Chef, Adeparusi Damilola, also referred to as Chef Dammy, was marred by condemnation and controversy.

Chef Dammy concluded a controversial 120-hour cook-a-thon in Ekiti State in June. She said she did it for fun and not to break the Guinness World Record, and she will embark on an official one soon.

Another Nigerian chef, Adeola Adeyeye, aka, Deo kick-started a 150-hr cookathon on June 30, 2023, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo state, recently completed her quest.

Chef Deo mentioned that GWR acknowledged and authorized her to proceed with the record attempt.

If she submits her cooking evidence to the Guinness World Records and it is certified accurate, she will become the new record holder.

Not stopping there, a renowned chef from Liberia, Wonyean Aloycious, via his social media, promised to challenge Hilda’s cooking ‘record’.

Also, a popular Kenyan chef, Maliha who broke 2 Guinness records in 2017 and 2019, vowed to challenge Hilda Baci’s ‘record’ in August in a cooking marathon.
