American actress, Jada Pinkett Smith, has revealed that she and her husband Will Smith have been separated since 2016.
She announced this in a clip from her forthcoming primetime special program with Hoda Kotb on NBC News.
She said that she and Will Smith had not made their divorce public because they were not “ready yet” at the time.
She further stated that they are not yet divorced but have been living apart since 2016.
Jada Pinkett-Smith told Kotb that they kept the breakup hidden because they were still figuring out their relationship dynamic and how best to proceed with their partnership.
She said:
“We were still trying to figure out between the two of us, how to be in partnership, How do we present that to people? We hadn’t figured that out.”
When asked why the marriage ended, she said that by 2016, they had become weary of trying to live up to their shared ideal of who they thought they should be.
Regarding their upcoming divorce, Pinkett-Smith said they simply couldn’t carry it out due to a vow they made to each other to never get divorced.
“Why it fractured, that’s a lot of things,” the actress stated, “I think by the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be. I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce, We will work through whatever, and I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”
Since she admitted to having a sexual “entanglement” with singer August Alsina while she was still married to Smith, the couple’s marriage has come under fire.
Smith was her guest on an episode of Red Table Talk in 2020 when she made this confession, and Smith was clearly hurt by the admission.
