Wumi Toriola opens up to Debbie Shokoya on why her marriage ended, co-parenting and more [VIDEO]

My marriage crashed because my husband couldn’t handle my fame – Wumi Toriola

Popular Nigerian filmmaker cum actress, Wumi Toriola has spoken on her crashed marriage, co-parenting with her ex and her personality.

Speaking on a podcast with her colleague Debbie Shokoya, Wumi revealed one of the reasons her marriage crashed was her now ex-husband threatening her with her fame.

The mother of one said she believes in making things work but her partner didn’t. She claimed he was quick to tell her that if anything goes wrong, it’s her name that would be dragged in the mud since she’s the one with the fame.

She added that it got to a point in her marriage, when she wanted to call a media outlet to announce her separation but changed her mind.

Wumi Toriola stated that her fame was used to keep her trapped in the marriage, until she decided to move on and damn all consequences.

Following her separation, she has channeled her energy into her son and making movies.

Speaking on co-parenting, Wumi says she and her husband are on a good note and he is actively involved in his son’s life. Her words:

“I got married to a young man, we had our lives coming up. I used to believe we could work things out but at a point when you have issues in marriage and keep letting you feel your celebrity status is on the rock. Things that would have been settled.

Me and my ex co-parent on a good note. He is 100% involved in his child as of today.

I even realized that the co-parenting is going better, we could have even ended up being friends.

There was a point when I called Punch newspaper for an interview, I was still married then and I wanted to break the news to them, but I still slowed down.

At some point when my marriage failed, I just put all my energy into my movie and that’s what I am reaping today. My mental health was a mess then but I channeled the energy into my movies”.

Speaking about her personality, Wumi said as much as she seems like an extrovert to people, she’s very emotional. In her words:

“People don’t know this about me. I’m a very emotional person. I cry behind closed doors but it doesn’t make you weak. I’d like to say something, it (i.e crying) doesn’t make you weak.

Like me, once I cry about an issue, it’s a done deal. Even if it’s relationship I cry over it, if it’s friendship I cry over it. Then the violence in me takes over. That means I’ve moved on.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Wumi revealed that she is open to being a second wife.

According to her, being a single mother of one has left her no choice but to accept whatever comes her way as she considers herself “after one” now.

She further disclosed that she is open to marrying a widower, or someone like her, who has previously been married with kids.
