I’m not among the top 10 funniest comedians in Nigeria – AY Makun spills in new interview (VIDEO)

In the world of Nigerian stand-up comedy tossing out a joke is one thing, but truly tickling people's funny bones is a different ball game. AY Makun, often dubbed "not funny" by many, confronted critics in a recent interview. He candidly shared his journey to success, discussed colleagues seen as funnier, and jolted fans by boldly stating he doesn't envision himself making the cut in his own top 10 funniest comedians in Nigeria.

Nigerian comedian and filmmaker, Ayodeji Richard Makun, popularly known as A.Y, has stirred up online buzz with his recent remarks regarding his own comedic prowess.

Despite his significant success as a stand-up comedian over the years, AY has continued to be deemed “not funny” by critics, particularly on social media.

During a recent chit-chat with media personality Toke Makinwa, AY addressed his critics by asserting that stand-up comedy isn’t solely about who’s the funniest.

He emphasized the importance of creating a niche and cultivating a loyal fanbase, elements he believes have sustained his success and provided him with livelihood.

AY emphasized that his success doesn’t compel him to show respect to those critics deem funnier than him.

The filmmaker went on to state that if tasked with listing the top 10 funniest comedians in Nigeria presently, he wouldn’t even include himself in the lineup.

This is coming weeks after the Nigerian comic star penned an apology to Davido over an insensitive joke he made about the singer at a show in Warri.

WITHIN NIGERIA recall reporting that AY, during an event at Warri which Davido failed to attend, made a joke about the singer’s manhood and baby mamas.

Following the massive backlash that trailed the joke, AY apologised to his Instagram page as he tagged Davido to the post.

He wrote;

“I am so sorry for telling that joke the way it came out in Warri. I shouldn’t even call it a joke anymore . It wasn’t funny like it was during my tour of US and Canada, and you have every right to be angry after seeing how the blogs used it.

“Please know that it is always a learning experience for all of us in the entertainment business. I deserve any backlash or negative thoughts coming my way for the joke that was badly delivered in Warri. So, no excuses at all, my Aburo. No reason am. I remain your number one fan, and I love you, @davido”
