Police have arrested veteran Nollywood actor Mr. Ibu’s son, Oyeabuchi Daniel Okafor, and adopted daughter, Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu, over allegations of embezzling N55 million from funds raised for the actor’s medical expenses.

The Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCID), located in Alagbon, Lagos State, announced the arrest in a communiqué on Thursday, January 25, 2024.

According to FCID Spokesperson ASP Mayegun Aminat, the investigation stemmed from a petition received on September 6, 2023, from Diamond Waves Law on behalf of Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor, the wife of Mr. Ibu.

The petition accused Oyeabuchi Daniel Okafor, Valentine Okafor, both sons of Mr. Ibu, and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu of conspiring to defraud Mr. Ibu while he was on his sick bed.

“On 6th September, 2023, a petition was received from Diamond Waves Law on behalf of Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor wherein one Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor, Valentine Okafor, both of whom are sons of Mr. John Ikechukwu Okafor (Alias Ibu) and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu were alleged to have conspired to defr@ud Mr. Ibu while being on sick bed,” ASP Mayegun Aminat said.

The actor had initiated a public fundraising campaign to cover his medical bills, seeking contributions from fans, industry peers, and the general public.

Initially, Mrs. Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor, Mr. Ibu’s wife, was entrusted with managing the finances aimed at supporting the family and covering the medical expenses.

However, the investigation revealed that Oyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu allegedly stole Mrs. Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor’s phone and gained unauthorized access to Mr. Ibu’s financial details.

The funds, which were intended for Mr. Ibu’s medical needs, were reportedly misappropriated by the actor’s children.

The police have taken action, detaining Oyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu on charges of fraud.
