Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla has addressed claims that she has denied her black heritage.
In a statement shared on her X page, Tyla clarified that she has never rejected her blackness, contrary to rumors circulating on social media.
The 22-year-old singer emphasized that her ancestry is a beautiful blend of black/Zulu, Irish, Mauritian/Indian, and Coloured roots.
Tyla explained that in South Africa, she would be classified as a Coloured woman, while in other parts of the world, she would be identified as a black woman.
She acknowledged that the classification of race varies across different regions and cultures.
Tyla stressed that she understands the significance and weight of the term ‘Coloured’ outside of South Africa and doesn’t expect others to identify her as such.
She wrote:
“Yoh guys, [I have] never denied my blackness, idk where that came from…
“I’m mixed with black/Zulu, irish, Mauritian/Indian and Coloured.
“In South Africa I would be classified as a Coloured woman and other places I would be classified as a black woman.
“Race is classified differently in different parts of the world.
“I don’t expect to be identified as Coloured outside of Southa by anyone not comfortable doing so because I understand the weight of that word outside of SA. But to close this conversation, I’m both Coloured in South Africa and a black woman.”
In another story, the south African singer clarified that she is not in Illuminati.
Tyla attributed her success to her faith, emphasizing that God is at the core of everything she has achieved.
The singer expressed her frustration with the widespread misconception that joining the Illuminati is the only path to achieving stardom in the music industry. She believes that her accomplishments are a testament to the power of hard work.
