- VDM’s recent release from police custody amid a N300 million fraud case has sparked a wave of discussion online.
Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has spoken out against the recent arrest of media personality Martins Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman (VDM), emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression.
In a video posted on his Instagram page, Speed Darlington criticized the practice of arresting individuals for voicing their opinions, stressing that such actions are unacceptable in a democratic society.
The controversial artist highlighted his own experiences, asserting that he frequently critiques others’ work, including songs, without fear of retaliation through legal means such as lawsuits.
He pointed out that if his criticisms result in negative consequences for the subjects, such as decreased attendance at a church due to noise pollution complaints, he could face legal repercussions in the form of a lawsuit rather than arrest.
Speed Darlington’s remarks were prompted by the recent arrest of VDM, who was reportedly taken into custody amidst a controversy involving alleged financial fraud amounting to N300 million.
Despite stating that he is not a supporter of VDM, Speed Darlington maintained that individuals should not face arrest for expressing their views.
He argued that legal recourse, such as litigation, should be pursued instead of resorting to arrests which he deemed unjustifiable.
In his statement, Speed Darlington also criticized VDM for allegedly seeking attention through controversial means, suggesting that such actions are misguided.
