“I withdraw my respect” – Charly Boy reacts to renaming of National Theatre after Soyinka

Charly Boy Expresses Disappointment Over National Theatre Renaming

Veteran singer and social activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has publicly expressed his discontent with the renaming of the National Arts Theatre in Lagos after Prof Wole Soyinka.

In a recent post on his X handle, Charly Boy stated that he will no longer hold Soyinka in high esteem, citing his disagreement with the decision.

The renaming announcement was made by President Bola Tinubu as a tribute to Soyinka on his 90th birthday.

Charly Boy, a vocal critic of the president, protested the move, questioning the motivations behind it.

He referenced a past conversation about Soyinka, implying that his views about Wole Soyinka have changed.

He wrote:

Uncle WOLE I henceforth withdraw all the respect I once had for you.

“When late Jimmyjohnson talked about you in the 90s, I thought he was only yabbing you.

“Wow! How some of our MIGHTYs have fallen, for beans, ewa, dodo, is it for rice”.

In another story, Charly Boy reacts to viral photo of Amaechi waiting at airport for commercial flight.

Charly Boy, also called Area Fada, who posted the picture of the former Rivers State governor on X (Formerly Twitter), noted that it was a humbling experience for Amaechi who was not used to such when he was in government.

In the post Charly Boy titled “Time & Tide: Nigerian Mumu Leaders’, the self-styled Senior Advocate of the Masses (SAM), wrote:

“Once your reign is over:

1. The hypocrites are gone.

2. The sycophants are gone.

3. The bootlickers are gone.

4. The MOPOL security men are gone.

5. DSS are withdrawn.

6. Soldiers are re-assigned.

7. FAAN staff no longer shake or shiver at your presence.

8. You no longer have access to Rivers State aircraft.

9. You cannot afford to charter an aircraft from your personal income.

Then Amaechi has to stay in the same departure lounge in Abuja with me (an Alagbado man), waiting for an aircraft that was delayed for 1 hour.

Whatever position you occupy presently that makes you believe that you are superior to your colleagues, please remember that it is temporary.

Power is transient.”
