In the heart of Lagos, a doctor turned artist embarked on a journey that transcended the realms of medicine and art. Fola David, with a fervor that burned brighter than the midday sun, took to Onikan Stadium to paint the canvas of history, a spectacle witnessed by Peter Obi, Hila Baci and the rest. His mission was not just to break a record but to weave a tapestry of Nigeria’s diverse cultures with every stroke. This was not just a feat of artistic endurance; it was a symphony of dedication, passion, and national pride, conducted by a man whose heart beats for both honor and creation

Fola David, the indefatigable Nigerian doctor and visual artist, has etched his name into the annals of history by setting a dazzling new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the largest drawing by an individual.

This artistic colossus began his Herculean endeavor on July 16, transformed Onikan Stadium into a vibrant canvas of creativity and endurance.

David, hailing from the bustling city of Lagos, embarked on this six-day drawing marathon with a grand vision: to illustrate a sprawling map of Nigeria, meticulously showcasing the nation’s rich tapestry of diverse cultures.

With each stroke, he aimed to capture the essence and spirit of his homeland.

By Friday, David had not only surpassed the previous record of 629.98 m² (6781.04 ft²), held by India’s Ravi Soni since November 30, 2021, but he had obliterated it with a monumental artwork. Soni’s record, achieved in Rajasthan, now stands in the shadow of David’s awe-inspiring feat.

Yet, David’s ambitions soar higher still, as he revealed his ultimate goal: to create a mind-boggling 1000 square metres of art, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of visual arts.

Throughout this artistic odyssey, David was not alone. A cavalcade of distinguished Nigerians flocked to Onikan Stadium to cheer him on, turning the event into a veritable festival of support and admiration.

Among the illustrious visitors were Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate whose presence added a political gravitas; Hilda Baci, the celebrated chef and former GWR holder, whose culinary fame and charm brought an extra sparkle to the proceedings; and Farooq Oreagba, the flamboyant businessman who had recently dazzled the crowds at the 2024 Ojude Oba Festival.

Adding to the chorus of support, the management of the College of Medicine University of Lagos (CMUL), David’s alma mater, made a resounding show of solidarity.

The attempt is expected to end on July 21. David’s record-breaking attempt is however subject to confirmation from the prestigious British reference book.
