‘I’m not in rush to be on Rema, Asake’s level’ – Victony
  • Victony stated that he isn’t in a rush to be on his colleague’s level while reacting to claims by some social media users that his debut album ‘Stubborn’ wasn’t commercially successful because he didn’t have haters to post negative comments to make it trend.
  • Victony in reaction stated that the assumption didn’t make sense, saying that those pushing that narrative have high expectations for the album beyond his current status in the music industry.

Afrobeats singer Victony has addressed comments on social media regarding his debut album “Stubborn” and its perceived commercial success.

Some social media users had suggested that the album didn’t gain enough attention due to a lack of negative comments from “haters”.

Victony responded, calling the assumption “dumb” and noting that people have unrealistic expectations for his album based on his current status in the industry.

He also expressed his thoughts on the pressure to achieve overnight success, stating that he is in no rush to reach the level of his colleagues, Rema and Asake.

On his X handle, he wrote:

“Lmao, Victony need more haters gotta be the dumbest shit I seen cos what’s the rush? Everyone wanna be Rema and Asake in 2 hours?”

The singer had earlier opened up on how Olamide inspired his debut album ‘Stubborn’.

The singer spoke about his encounter with Olamide at a listening party for the project scheduled for a June 28 release.

The ‘Soweto’ hitmaker revealed that the YBNL label chief executive encouraged him to make ‘Stubborn’ an album.

Victony said the rapper, fondly called Baddo, told him he needed to put out an album “when the fans are yearning for it”.

He added that Olamide’s backing prompted his decision to make ‘Stubborn’ an album instead of an extended play as announced.

He said:

“Stubborn was supposed to be an EP. I felt like I was not album-ready.”

“Before the release of the single ‘Stubborn’, I went to Baddo’s house to seek advice like my big brother.

“The meeting had a different outcome. I went there with my guys, just discussing with Baddo. He told me, ‘Look, you do not want to put out a body of work when your fans are no longer yearning for it.’

“That hit me because I feel like I am a project artiste and that is how people understand me best. I thought about it and I am like, ‘Why not? What is holding me back?’ And then I tweeted a picture with Baddo.

“That very day was the day we decided to make this an album. I had announced Stubborn as my next project but as an EP.”
