Why I named the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena after Rema – Gov Obaseki

As Governor Obaseki stood alongside Rema, placing the foundation stone for what is now the Rema Dome, it wasn't just bricks and mortar being laid down—it was a testament to the power of dreams, to the relentless spirit of a young boy from Benin who dared to believe in his music, in his art, and in himself. It was a powerful message to every youth in Edo State that their dreams are valid, that their potential is limitless

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has unveiled the heartfelt reason behind his decision to rename the massive 6,000-capacity Edo Arena after the sensational Benin-born artist, Divine Ikubor, famously known as Rema.

The “Calm Down” hitmaker, Rema, stood side by side with the governor in Benin City as they laid the first stone at the groundbreaking ceremony for the newly christened venue, now to be known as the Rema Dome.

This remarkable event took place on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a journey that leads up to Rema’s highly anticipated homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium—a concert that promises to electrify the hearts of his fans and the entire city of Benin.

Governor Obaseki, in a bold move that has sparked waves of pride and joy across the state, declared that Rema is not just a music star but a true ambassador for Benin and the broader Edo State.

Obaseki emphasized that the Rema Dome would not only serve as a beacon of pride for the people of Edo but also as a magnet for international stars and visitors, boosting tourism and drawing global attention to the state.

He passionately explained that this newly named arena would become a hub where visitors can immerse themselves in the rich cultural tapestry of Edo State, experiencing firsthand the vibrant heritage and unmatched hospitality that the state has to offer.

This initiative, the governor noted, is more than just a name change—it’s a strategic move to enhance the state’s profile as a tourism hotspot, thereby attracting investments and creating invaluable employment opportunities for the youth of Edo.

Obaseki reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to fostering growth by boosting tourism, thereby ensuring that Edo State becomes a leading destination for both national and international visitors.

On his X handle, on Wednesday, the Governor wrote, “It was a pleasure to have our global music icon @heisrema, join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, which will be called ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City.”
