Nigerian singer Rema, born Divine Ikubor, speaks about his influence on the Afrobeats genre.
In a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Rema asserted that he created a template for new artistes to follow.
According to Rema, his approach to the music industry has been emulated by every new Afrobeats artist since 2019.
He specifically highlighted his decision to release an extended play (EP) as a debut, which he believes started a trend.
“When I came into the game [music industry], I brought a template. The way new artists come and dominate, mine was different. I started the EP trend. Every [new Afrobeats] artist since 2019 walked on that path like when you come out, you popped out with an EP,” he said.
Rema acknowledged that some people may be hesitant to give him credit for his innovation, which prompted him to speak about his own accomplishments.
He emphasized that he prefers not to be seen as an Afrobeats Messiah but feels compelled to highlight his contributions since others may not acknowledge them.
“A lot of people would argue [my innovation in Afrobeats]. I don’t like to feel an Afrobeats Messiah.
“Sometimes, people don’t like young people applauding themselves. Sometimes, it’s not for you to say. Sometimes, it’s the truth but it’s just not for you to say.
“Sometimes I can’t wait for the OGs to say it but since no one is saying it, I might have to say it myself,” he explained.
Rema had earlier asserted that his song created International Awards category for Afrobeats .
Rema also positioned himself alongside prominent Afrobeats artists, stating that he considers himself myself among the ‘Big four’
He acknowledged the contributions of top artists while emphasizing his own impact.
