Ayra Starr Speaks on Comparison with Tyla

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has recently addressed the online comparisons between her and South African artist, Tyla.

Recall that the two young musicians were both nominated for the Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammys, which Tyla ultimately won.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1 Xtra, Ayra Starr described Tyla as her “home girl” and expressed her disinterest in letting the comparison affect their relationship.

She highlighted the importance of supporting each other and focusing on making good music.

She said:

Tyla is my homegirl, that’s my G. That doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t care about all of that. Less noise, more music.

Let’s support each other, like, why not, like afrobeats and African music is about to take over the world and we have to come together to be able to do that. There’s no need for comparisons.”

Following Tyla’s win at the 66th Grammys,  Davido, Ayra Starr sent in their congratulations.

Despite the disappointment, their gracious and sportsmanlike gestures exemplify the supportive nature and camaraderie that exists within the African music community.

Recall that Tyla won the historic gramophone on Sunday night, beating out Ayra Starr, Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, and Olamide.

However, using their separate social media accounts, Davido and Ayra Starr congratulated Tyla on her win.

Congratulations on your win @Tyllaaaaaaa ! Big One for Africa! Keep soaring!,” Davido wrote on his X page.

On Monday morning, Ayra Starr wrote on her X handle:

Congratulations to my babessssss @Tyllaaaaaaa.”

Tyla and Ayra Starr previously worked on her popular song, ‘Girl Next Door.’
