Night vigil or shift: Pastor Abel Damina shares his thoughts on Peter Obi’s church stance (VIDEO)
  • Peter Obi’s recent call for Nigerians to prioritize night shifts over traditional vigils didn’t just ruffle feathers; it struck a nerve across the faith community,
  • Damina didn’t shy away from the controversy. His response was layered, mixing moments of support with pointed challenges to Obi’s stance, as he weighed the sacred against the practical.

Dr. Abel Damina, the powerhouse behind Abel Damina Ministries and Power City International, recently waded into the storm of controversy sparked by Peter Obi’s latest eyebrow-raising proposal.

Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, had rocked the nation with his suggestion that churches trade in their night vigils for night shifts.

While some Nigerians voiced support for Obi’s drive for productivity, prominent religious figures like OPM pastor Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere denounced his remarks, viewed it as a direct affront to a sacred practice.

In an intense segment on Your View, TVC’s hit talk show, Dr. Damina joined media heavyweights Morayo Afolabi-Brown, Yeni Kuti, and others to weigh in on the debate.

The interview quickly turned heated, with Damina addressing Obi’s proposal head-on. He started by openly opposing the idea, stating bluntly that night vigils were far from Nigeria’s biggest challenge.

For Damina, the issue lies in the government’s inability to provide citizens with sustainable night shift opportunities.

He argued that it was the government’s responsibility to lay the foundation for such shifts in priorities before challenging deeply rooted practices.

Yeni Kuti, however, wasn’t about to let him off the hook that easily. She pushed back, pointing out that some night shift jobs do still exist, even if limited.

With that, Damina shifted gears. He acknowledged that perhaps there was merit in Obi’s sentiment about excessive religious dependence.

Damina admitted that Nigerians’ reliance on faith has often replaced practical steps toward progress—a reality he knows all too well as a pastor.
