Big Brother Naija alum Uriel Oputa has opened up about her challenging experience caring for her mother, who suffers from vascular dementia.
On her Instagram story, Uriel shared that the past few days had been exceptionally difficult, as she took on sole responsibility for her mother’s care.
She revealed that she had to forgive her mother for not managing her high blood pressure, which contributed to her health decline.
Uriel stated that she has forgiven her mother for potentially missing significant life milestones, such as the birth of her future children.
She highlighted that despite feeling unproductive in other areas of her life because of her mother’s illness, she has found solace in reflecting on her journey towards forgiveness.
She also revealed that she has forgiven herself for her past reactions to her mother’s situation.
Uriel Oputa added that her newfound passion for health awareness and prevention stems from her desire to spare others from similar struggles.
In her words:
“These last few days have been incredibly hard. Yesterday, I fed my mother breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which meant I couldn’t get to anything else. It left me feeling unproductive, but it reminded me of one of the biggest things I’ve overcome: forgiveness.
“I had to forgive my mother. I forgave her for not taking her high blood pressure medication on time. Something that might have prevented her stroke and eventually, her vascular dementia. I forgave her for likely not being here when I have children and for not being able to do our traditional rites when a woman gives birth. And I forgave myself for the way I’d acted at times, knowing she wouldn’t be there. Over the years, I realized I was carrying a lot of anger, and I finally let it go.
This experience is why I’m so passionate about speaking on health and prevention. I want to make sure others don’t go through what I’m going through now.
Because it’s fucking hard.
I just want the old times”.
