The United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has appointed multi-talented Nigerian actress cum filmmaker, Olufunke Akindele as its national goodwill ambassador for Nigeria.
Funke Akindele’s appointment was announced during the World AIDS Day commemoration in Abuja on December 3.In a statement, Leopold Zekeng, UNAIDS country director for Nigeria, praised the actress-turned-producer’s dedication and commitment to social change.
Zekeng also expressed optimism about her contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS. He said:
“We are thrilled to welcome Funke Akindele as our National Goodwill Ambassador for Nigeria.”
“Her powerful voice, vast influence, and commitment to social change make her an invaluable ally in our efforts to combat HIV and support people living with HIV in Nigeria. We look forward to working with her to drive positive impact and progress in the fight against AIDS.”
Funke Akindele also shared her excitement on Instagram on Wednesday, December 4. She pledged to use her platform to support UNAIDS’ mission. Funke Akindele wrote:
“I am deeply honoured to have been appointed as @UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador. I remain committed to using my voice and platform to support the global fight against HIV/AIDS.
“Together we can work towards a world where everyone has access to the care, support, and treatment they need.
“I look forward to collaborating with relevant stakeholders and you all to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote health and human rights for all.”
Known for her iconic ‘Jenifa’ franchise, Akindele has won multiple awards, including the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2009.
She is also a five-time recipient of the Best Actress in a Comedy award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (2016, 2017, 2020, and 2022).
