- On the fateful Tuesday of December 12, 2024, drama unfolded in Edo State as Governor Okpebholo wrestled with words and composure while attempting to deliver the 2025 budget to the State House of Assembly.
- The spectacle, however, did not go unnoticed beyond the Assembly walls. Cobhams Asuquo, evidently moved to the core, took to his official social media platform with a heartfelt and impassioned post.
Renowned Nigerian singer and social commentator Cobhams Asuquo has ignited a passionate conversation online, expressing profound concern and disappointment over the unsettling actions of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, during the presentation of the state’s 2025 budget.
The event, which has now gone viral across social media platforms, captured a visibly flustered Okpebholo stumbling over critical figures, pausing awkwardly, and struggling to maintain composure in what should have been a demonstration of confidence and leadership.
“The Edo state Appropriation Bill of six billion… 605 billion… 76 million…” Okpebholo began, his hands unsteady and voice quivering in the rarefied assembly.
“Let me take it again. 506 billion… 605 billion… sorry… 776 billion… sorry, it’s confusing me.”
In a heartfelt and piercing critique posted on Instagram, Asuquo did not mince words as he dissected the shocking scene.
He described the governor’s perceived lackluster delivery as “deeply troubling”, tag it as a stark reminder of the dangers of placing unprepared individuals in positions of authority.
Asuquo’s post delved into the broader implications of such lapses, as he questioned how a state as rich in talent and intellect as Edo could find itself represented by leadership that falters at the simplest of tasks.
He wrote;
“To be clear, some of the most brilliant Nigerian minds I have encountered are from Edo State,
“So this begs the question, is it that we’re not ready to tell ourselves the truth, or that we don’t want progress as much as we claim to?
“Some choices may be foisted on us but is that to remain our lot? What does governance mean to us; all of us – the governed and the governor?
“I’m really confused this hot afternoon. This is bad. Very, very bad. There got to be a way out.”
