How I convinced Wizkid to do afrobeats – Eldee

• Eldee has shared the impact he had on Wizkid’s career, especially the latter’s eventual genre choice.

Nigerian rapper Lanre Dabiri, better known as Eldee The Don has revealed the role he played in the early stages of Grammy-winning singer Wizkid’s career.

Featuring on the Adesope Live show, Eldee revealed that he was the one who convinced Wizkid to do afrobeats.

He mentioned that when Wizkid was signed to EME record label, he was initially leaning towards Reggae and Dancehall, but he advised him to create music with Nigerian influences. In his words:

“Wizkid was leaning towards Reggae and Dancehall when Banky W signed him before he dropped his first single but I told him he has to find a middle ground and do something Nigerian with a lot of flavors in it.”

Eldee The Don who relocated abroad a while back said Wizkid took the advice and started making Afropop songs like ‘Don’t Dull,’ which gave him a big break.

On the same podcast, the singer highlighted his father’s pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s technological landscape, revealing that he was the first to connect the country to the internet.

Eldee disclosed that his father established Nigeria’s first cyber cafe in Lagos and provided internet services to major clients, including oil companies like Mobil and government institutions such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

He credited his early exposure to technology to his father’s groundbreaking efforts, noting that it significantly influenced his journey and gave him an edge into Nigeria’s competitive music industry.
