Ademola Lookman did what Davido and Kemi Badenoch failed to do – Reno Omokri fires shots

Reno Omokri’s words about Lookman’s victory show us the beauty of standing tall in a moment of triumph, but it also risks silencing those who seek to raise the alarm on a country’s failings

Ademola Lookman did what Davido and Kemi Badenoch failed to do – Reno Omokri fires shots
  • Reno Omokri, riding high on the thrilling wave of Ademola Lookman’s crowning as Africa’s best player, couldn’t resist lashing out with a sharp, calculated jab aimed squarely at Davido and Kemi Badenoch.
  • The critic drew a stark and biting comparison between Lookman’s powerful, patriotic speech—his victory echoing the pride of a continent—and the embattled, divisive remarks made earlier by Davido and Badenoch about Nigeria.

In a bold and piercing comparison, former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and public analyst, Reno Omokri, proclaimed that Super Eagles footballer Ademola Lookman achieved for Nigeria what neither music sensation Davido nor UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch ever could.

Omokri made this striking remark in a statement posted on his official Facebook page, following Lookman’s crowning as the CAF Footballer of the Year and his powerful, heartfelt speech of appreciation.

What made Lookman’s victory all the more extraordinary was the thunderous moment he stunned the world by speaking in Yoruba as his closing words—a tribute to his roots.

Recall that, while Davido’s comment about Nigeria’s economy being in shambles drew backlash, Badenoch faced criticism for calling Nigeria a very poor country with corrupt police.

Omokri criticized Davido and Badenoch for using their platforms to mock Nigeria, contrasting them with Lookman, who he claimed instead spoke positively about the country.

He wrote in parts;

“Recently, the singer David Adeleke was given a global stage to do whatever he wanted and deliver any message.

“Sadly, Mr. Adeleke used the opportunity to speak in an American accent. Not only that, he used that American accent to talk down on Nigeria and tell the world not to invest in Nigeria because, as he put it, Nigeria’s ‘economy is in shambles.’

“Coincidentally, a month after his faux pas, Kemi Badenoch, probably inspired by Davido, used her British accent to talk down Nigeria, calling us ‘a very poor country’ where the police rob citizens.

“And just when we thought it was all bad news, God gave us a breath of fresh air in the youthful Ademola Lookman, who used the global podium granted to him by his winning the 2024 African Footballer of the Year award to promote and project Nigeria and the Lukumi Yoruba language to the world,”
