Mr. and Mrs. Olowookere, the anguished parents of Segun Olowookere, who was sentenced to death at just 17 years old for stealing a fowl and eggs, tearfully shared their excruciating pain over their son’s tragic fate.
The couple, visibly shattered by years of torment, opened up about the unbearable nightmare they have endured since the 2010 conviction.
WITHIN NIGERIA gathered that Segun alongside one Morakinyo Sunday, was sentenced to die by hanging after being found guilty of forcibly breaking into the home of Mr. Balogun Tope, a police officer in Okuku, Osun State.
The crime, which involved the theft of some of his belongings, led to the teens being charged with conspiracy, robbery, and theft under Nigerian law,
Biola Adebayo, the renowned actress and talk show host of Talk-to-B, invited the devastated parents to her platform to tell the full story of their son’s tragic journey.
Mr. Olowookere recalled with sorrow how his son, when caught in the act, had been given a chance to escape but chose not to, driven by a desire to prove his innocence.
Despite the circumstances, Segun had persevered, he revealed his boy managed to educate himself in prison, even earning a degree in medicine. The shattered man recounted how he was told that a certain amount of money would be needed for his release, but the family’s desperate attempts to raise the funds failed, and their hopes for justice only spiraled further out of control.
Segun’s mother, who has spent the past 14 years in a continuous state of sleepless nights and unbearable grief, recalled how the judge who sentenced her son included a provision in the ruling, stating that Segun could be pardoned by any sitting governor of Osun State, 10 years after his conviction.
In her tears, Segun’s mother turned to the governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, begging him to intervene, to show mercy, and to overturn the harsh judgment that has condemned her son to an unjust fate.
Biola Adebayo, deeply moved by the Olowookere family’s pain, was unable to hold back her own tears in viral video as she joined in their desperate plea for help.
