Rey Misterio Sr., the iconic Mexican wrestler and uncle of WWE superstar Rey Mysterio Jr., has passed away on December 20, 2024, at the age of 66.

His death was confirmed by his family and the Mexican wrestling promotion, Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.

Born Miguel Ángel López Díaz, Misterio Sr. was a towering figure in Mexico’s lucha libre scene.

With a career spanning nearly five decades, he made significant contributions to the sport, wrestling for various prominent organizations, including Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Association (WWA).

Beyond his personal accomplishments in the ring, Misterio Sr. was also known for his role as a mentor to younger wrestlers.

He played a crucial part in shaping the careers of several wrestling stars, including his nephew, WWE’s Rey Mysterio Jr., a three-time world champion. Misterio Sr. also trained legends such as Konnan, Psicosis, Halloween, and Damian 666.

While the cause of his death has not been officially revealed, his passing comes shortly after the death of Rey Mysterio Jr.’s father, Robert Gutierrez, earlier this year.

Misterio’s daughter, Aalyah Gutierrez, paid tribute to her late uncle on social media, expressing her deep gratitude.

“Eternally grateful for you,” she wrote. “Without you, my dad wouldn’t be the person or fighter he is today. Rest in peace, uncle.”
