Basketmouth slams filmmakers for failing to showcase Nigeria’s culture in movies

Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has shared his thoughts on the state of cultural representation in Nigerian films.

In a recent interview with Hip TV, the comedian and filmmaker expressed his disappointment with the lack of cultural authenticity in many epic movies released in the country.

Basketmouth noted that these films often miss the opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage in a positive and meaningful way.

He stated that many of these movies come across as staged and lack the authenticity that would make them truly impactful.

Basketmouth highlighted the importance of getting it right, stating that filmmakers have a responsibility to accurately represent Nigerian culture on the big screen.

He acknowledged that there have been a few notable exceptions, but overall, he believes that more can be done to promote cultural awareness and understanding through movies.

In his words:

“I believe that we still have the opportunity to get it right. But we had a great opportunity to showcase our culture and most of the filmmakers blew it up. They just ruined that great chance because I see epic movies and they look like stage plays.

“When I was seeing most of the epic movies, I was disappointed.

“You guys blew up a great opportunity but let’s hope we still have another chance to strike at it.

“I’m sorry, only very few movies have impressed me so far. I believe that we can do more.”

In another news, Basketmouth reveals how Nollywood producers mismanage funds from streaming platforms.

In a recent interview on Arise TV, Basketmouth alleged that many producers use as little as 10% of the budgets allocated for movie production while diverting the rest to fund their personal lifestyles.

He claimed that streaming platforms eventually started paying actors directly to bypass dishonest producers.
