Seyi Law disagrees with a user’s claim that Gbenga Adeboye is the true father of stand-up comedy in Nigeria and West Africa

A recent conversation on X sparked a debate about the origins of stand-up comedy in Nigeria. Some attributed its beginnings to Gbenga Adeboye, while others argued that Ali Baba deserves recognition as the true pioneer.

Comedian Seyi Law weighed in on the discussion, emphasizing Ali Baba’s significant influence on the Nigerian comedy industry.

Ali Baba

According to Seyi Law, Ali Baba’s contributions to the industry are unequalled, having elevated stand-up comedy to national and international prominence.

Seyi Law highlighted Ali Baba’s role in establishing the business aspects of comedy

He cited Ali Baba’s impressive achievement of performing six hours of original comedy without repetition.

He said:

On this one, you are wrong. Alibaba brought national and international appeal to standup comedy beyond regional sentiments. Alibaba would always give reference to the hard work of those before him, but the structure and the business aspects of comedy were taught by Alibaba. Many big names today rode on Alibaba’s materials. Alibaba once did 6 hours of comedy of original materials without repetition. We call him king for a reason.”
