- Ogungbe revealed that Blackface was the first among the trio to release music, but his contributions to African Queen were not officially credited when the song was released under 2Baba‘s name.
- Ogungbe stated this while speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast.
Renowned music executive Kenny Ogungbe has shared his view on the long-standing controversy surrounding the hit song “African Queen.”
During an appearance on the Honest Bunch podcast, Ogungbe discussed the feud between former Plantashun Boiz members Blackface and 2Baba regarding ownership and royalties for the 2004 track.
According to Ogungbe, Blackface was the first member of the group to release song, but his contributions to “African Queen” were not formally recognized when the song was released under 2Baba’s name.
Ogungbe revealed that he had offered Plantashun Boiz a record deal, but they did not sign with him.
He also stated that Blackface was the first to release a solo track, but it did not gain widespread attention until “African Queen” was released.
Ogungbe noted that the song was registered with Broadcast Media Incorporated (BMI) in the US, but Blackface’s name was not included in the registration.
“I am going to tell you a story that many people are not aware of. I gave Plantashun Boiz a contract to sign because I wanted to sign them, but they did not return.
“The first one to release a song was not 2Baba; it was Blackface. But the song did not blow until when we dropped African Queen and registered it with BMI—Broadcast Media Incorporated of USA—but his name was not on it,” he added.
The controversy surrounding “African Queen” has been ongoing for years, with Blackface accusing 2Baba of unfairly taking credit for the song and profiting from it without proper acknowledgement.
Few months ago, Blackface called for Plantashun Boiz’s reunion.
The group, which consisted of Blackface, 2Face, and Faze, was active in the early 2000s.
In a recent Instagram post, Blackface called on his former bandmates to reunite, emphasizing the importance of unity.
