Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of Living Faith Church and Chancellor of Covenant University, recently shared an awe-inspiring testimony about how his renowned institution was established in just seven months.
Reflecting on the divine journey, Oyedepo highlighted how faith and divine guidance played a pivotal role in the university’s rapid development.
The journey reportedly began when Covenant University received its operational license on February 12, 2002.
While excitement surrounded this new venture, Oyedepo sought confirmation from God, questioning whether the university was indeed part of His divine plan. In response, he received a clear answer: “It is I.”
With this divine assurance, the work began. Ground clearing for the university commenced on March 6, 2002, and by October 21 of the same year, Covenant University opened its doors to its first batch of 1,500 students.
In just seven months, the campus was fully developed, with lecture halls, male and female hostels, and a fully stocked library.
Remarkably, there were no temporary or makeshift structures; everything was completed with precision.
During the university’s dedication ceremony, Oyedepo shared a powerful moment of surrender. He humbly laid flat before God, symbolizing the complete handing over of the university to divine leadership.
In his words:
“When we got the license to operate Covenant University, everybody was excited. Was I? I’m not sure. Because I asked the Lord, ‘Lord, tell me if it’s not Your university, I’m not interested. I’m not going to school anymore.’ And I heard Him say, ‘It is I.'”
“It is I” meant a lot. He spoke that on February 12, 2002. We began clearing the ground for the university on March 6. By October 21, 1,500 students resumed on campus. Two halls of residence—one for males, one for females—were ready, and all the buildings were fully completed. There was no lecture held outside the facility. The library and everything else were in place in just seven months. How many months? And there were no bungalows—everything was done properly, all within seven months, by His hand. “It is I.”
“Now, wait a minute. “The day we dedicated the university, He said to me, ‘Now hand it over to Me. Now come and see the hand of God.’ I asked, ‘How do I hand it over to You?’ He said, ‘Lay flat on this floor before Me.’ So I laid down before Him, before all the students, their parents, and church leaders. I was the maddest person there. I laid down before Him, and He took it over. Now, in 15 years, watch. Covenant University is today listed among the elite group of universities, which is only 1,002 in the world.”
“Out of 29,000 universities in the world, Covenant has jumped to the 1,000 realm. The hand of God in 15 years. Now, listen, I’m talking about Oxford. I’m talking about Harvard. I’m talking about Yale. I’m talking about that group of elite universities in 15 years. Watch it. The hand of God that engenders speed is coming on your life.”
