South African media personality Kefilwe Mabote recently sparked controversy after sharing a video of herself burning her expensive designer clothes.
The decision, which was met with criticism from many who suggested she should have donated the items instead, was reportedly motivated by her newfound commitment to Christianity.
In a follow-up Instagram post, Mabote explained that her decision to burn the clothes was based on her interpretation of biblical teachings.
She cited Joshua 7:13, which describes certain items as “accursed,” and expressed her conviction that the designer clothes, which featured symbols and imagery associated with Greek mythology, were incompatible with her Christian beliefs.
Mabote acknowledged that some people might not understand her decision, but emphasized that she could not in good conscience pass on items that she believed carried negative spiritual connotations.
She wrote:
“I’ve been getting questions about why I chose to burn Versace items instead of giving them away, and I want to take a moment to explain with care and understanding.
“The decision to burn the items came from a place of conviction. According to the Bible, such things are considered ‘accursed’ (see Joshua 7:13 for context). For example the image of Medusa represents a Greek god, from the marine kingdom and as believers, we cannot serve two masters. To give these items away would be to pass on something I no longer stand for, and I can’t in good conscience transfer things that I know carry deep spiritual implications.”
