Isreal DMW reminds Nigerians of Obasanjo’s 2004 sacking of Plateau Governor amid Tinubu’s Fubara suspension

Davido’s logistics manager, Israel Afeare, better known as Israel DMW, has subtly weighed in on the buzz surrounding the dramatic suspension of Rivers State Governor, Amaopusenibo Siminalayi Fubara.

WITHIN NIGERIA earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, sent shockwaves through the political landscape.

In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, Tinubu announced the immediate suspension of Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and the entire Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months, citing political instability.

The unprecedented move has triggered fierce debate across the country, with Nigerians, including celebrities, questioning its constitutional backing.

Amid the uproar, Israel DMW took to his Instagram story to drop a history lesson, shared the front page of a 2004 newspaper captioned with a deep sigh, that recalls a similar moment in Nigerian history.

According to the old headline, this is not the first time a sitting president has flexed such executive power. In May 2004, exactly one year into his second term, President Olusegun Obasanjo declared a state of emergency in Plateau State, following deadly religious clashes.

Reports at the time indicated that over 600 Muslims were slaughtered in Yelwa, Plateau State, allegedly by Christian militants. The carnage sparked a wave of retaliatory killings in Kano, throwing the nation into chaos.

Obasanjo sacked Plateau State Governor Joshua Dariye, accused him of failing to curb the bloodshed.

He also suspended the state legislature, stripped them of all powers, and installed a retired army general, Chris Ali, as interim administrator for six months.
