I was so broke and hopeless, I used to steal food – Tems reflects on humble beginnings prior stardom

Sensational Nigerian songstress cum composer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems has reflected on her humble beginnings before rising to stardom.

During an interview with British fashion and lifestyle magazine, she spoke about her success in her career and recounted her life struggles before stardom. Tems said she used to be so broke to the extent that she stole food. She said:

“There were times when I was not just broke – I was broke and hopeless. I used to steal food. I used to go to my aunty’s house just so she could give me food to take home.”

According to Tems, the reason for her struggles was the responsibility on her to provide for her family and her difficulty in securing a good job.

WITHIN NIGERIA recalls Tems responded to her senior colleague, Waje’s request for a collaboration.

Waje, born Aituaje Iruobe, attracted mixed reactions from fans after she publicly sought a collaboration with Tems in a Twitter post.

In a tweet late Monday, the 42-year-old pleaded to her fans to convey her wishes to the ‘Crazy Tings’ star. Waje tweeted:

“Imagine @temsbaby and I on track. Please, guys, whisper to her.”

Responding to the request on Tuesday, September 20, Tems quoted the post, asking the vocalist to check her inbox. She replied:

“Check yah dmss Siss.”

Waje made her debut in the music industry with a feature on P-Square’s’ “Do Me’ in 2007, while Tems came to the limelight in 2019 after her single, ‘Try Me’.

Tems also gained international recognition after her collaboration with Grammy winner Wizkid on the hit song ‘Essence’.
