Supporters of popular radio presenter Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat have taken to the streets of Ibadan to protest his continued detention following his involvement in a tragic stampede at a children’s funfair.
The incident, which occurred last week, claimed the lives of at least 36 children and has sparked widespread outrage across the city.
The stampede took place after an estimated 7,500 people attended an event designed for only 5,000 children.
As the crowd grew uncontrollable, security measures were overwhelmed, leading to chaos and the heartbreaking loss of young lives.
Hamzat, who was present at the event, was praised in viral footage for his efforts to help rescue victims and attempt to disperse the crowd.
However, he was arrested along with event organizer Queen Naomi and others involved, facing murder charges in connection with the disaster.
The arrests have sparked fierce protests, particularly from women and mothers, who rallied in the streets of Ibadan demanding Hamzat’s immediate release.
Chanting “Free Oriyomi Hamzat,” the protesters voiced their anger at what they believe to be an unjust detainment.
One demonstrator expressed the sentiments of many, saying, “His only offense was providing for the needy. Oriyomi Hamzat must not be jailed!”
Supporters argue that Hamzat’s actions during the event were heroic and that he should not be held accountable for the tragic turn of events.
They contend that the stampede was a result of poor event planning and crowd management, factors outside of Oriyomi’s control.
