Gennaro Gattuso has left his role as manager of Napoli after a 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona on Sunday night saw them fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Napoli began the day in fourth, knowing they needed to better Juventus’ result against Bologna to secure qualification.
However, Gattuso’s side came unstuck against mid-table Verona as they could only manage a draw, while Juventus cruised to a 4-1 victory to leapfrog Napoli in the Serie A table.
Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed Gattuso’s departure on Twitter, as he posted: “Dear Rino, I am happy to have spent the last two seasons with you.
“Thanking you for the work done, I wish you success wherever you may go.
“I also send a hug to your wife and children. Aurelio De Laurentiis.”
