Gunmen suspected to be IPOB/ESN members on Sunday, May 23, at about 8:20pm attacked B Division of the Nigeria Police Divisional Station and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Akwa, Anambra.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the fully armed attackers came in three Hilux trucks.
WITHIN NIGERIA gathered that the gunmen shot into the air close to one hour at B Police Division before proceeding to the INEC office where they were repelled by security operatives.
A source who spoke in anonymity, said before proceeding to INEC, the gunmen drove to Aroma junction and shot in the air for about 10 minutes which made residents scamper for safety before they headed down to INEC where the hoodlums attempted to set the main headquarters building ablaze but were successfully repelled by the policemen on guard duty along with Police Special Forces who were quickly mobilized to the scene forcing them to scamper for safety with many sustaining gunshot wounds as revealed by blood trails in the surrounding bushes.
“I saw flames of fire going up from the police station and INEC offices, but I cannot say whether people were killed or not because I did not go closer,” he said.
WITHIN NIGERIA learnt that four INEC Vehicles and an empty hall were touched from a bomb thrown into the premises. 3 Hilux Vehicles used by the assailants were recovered, other items recovered include; four pump action guns, one type-06 rifles, one explosive device, over 50 expended cartridges and ammo, charms, five black and green berets were recovered at B Division Mine.
It was also learnt that an explosive ordnance lobbed into the station partially torched the charge room but was quickly put out as the assailants were repelled. No Police casualty was recorded.
DIG of Police supervising the Southeast region along with COM POL ANS led other senior officers to the scene. Meanwhile, the scenes have been cordoned for evacuation of unexploded ordnances by EOD personnel, while Operatives mine are combing surrounding bushes and hospitals in search of wounded assailants and more weapons.
