Healthcare services at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, became paralysed as workers under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUALHP) downed tools to demand for their salaries.
Members of the union who carried placards with various inscriptions, moved into the hospital to stop some of their members from working.
NUALHP’s Chairman, Mr Oladayo Olabampe, at a press briefing to announce the indefinite strike by members of the union who consist of all health workers in the hospital, aside from doctors and nurses, said its members decided to embark on the strike because some of them employed in 2020 are being owed five months salaries.
Mr Olabampe stated that the stipends of interns in the medical line at the hospital had also been irregular since January 2021.
According to him, it was a double standard in the health sector on the part of the government to have interns from the field of medicine and dentistry paid through the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria house officer and leaving interns of other professions in the medical line.
