Nigerian Senate, on Monday, July 12, declined Lauretta Onochie’s nomination as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Onochie’s non-confirmation followed the report by the Senate Committee on (INEC), Senator Kabir Gaya who said her nomination breaches Federal Character principles.
Kabir Gaya cited Section 14 (1) 3 of the Constitution, stating that somebody was already a Commissioner from her zone, and the law remains clear about that.

In other news, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has called on members of the National Assembly (NASS) to enact laws regarding electronic transmission of votes during elections.
Tambuwal, who made the appeal at a news conference on Monday in Sokoto, stressed that the lawmakers should leave good legacy that would strengthen the nation’s democratic processes.
