Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose and former lawmaker, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce have reacted to the refusal of the Senate to confirm Lauretta Onochie as National Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
WITHIN NIGERIA reported that the Senate on Monday declined Onochie’s nomination as a National Commissioner for INEC.
Onochie’s non-confirmation followed reports by Senator Kabir Gaya-led the Senate Committee on INEC, who said her nomination breached the Federal Character principles.
Kabir Gaya cited Section 14 (1) 3 of the Constitution, stating that somebody was already a Commissioner from her zone and the law remains clear about that.
“On rejection of Lauretta Onochie’s nomination as INEC Commissioner, I commend the Senate for listening to Nigerians,” Fayose tweeted.
“This portends great hope for democracy & I hope the NASS can go further by subjecting itself more to what represents the interest of Nigerians, Congrats Nigerians!” He added.
Former lawmaker, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce also commended the Nigerian Senate for rejecting the nomination of Lauretta Onochie.
Reacting to this development, the former lawmaker from Bayelsa, Murray-Bruce who had earlier kicked against Onochie’s nomination, on Twitter wrote, ”I commend my colleagues in the 9th @NGRSenate for doing the right thing with the rejection of the nomination of a known APC member into INEC.
”This is very commendable.”
